Mr Bungle, California 1999
I once walked up a flight of stairs behind the stage at a festival and stood for five minutes, entirely still, mouth wide open, just staring at Mike Patton. He was speaking Italian to his backup-singers (of course), looked at me with a puzzling expression, and then continued his conversation. It was embarrassing to say the least, but this is what happens when you happen upon one of your musical idols without due notice. I'll always love anything Mike Patton releases (and wow does he have an impressive catalogue thus far) but I hazard a guess that California will always be my favourite. California is a wonderful album that runs through more musical genres than most people listen to throughout their entire life. In addition for me, the album is imbued with the special ambience of the summer beach holidays where I first listened to the album over and over again.
